Paradigm Shifting Technology

The pace that Technology effects and even changes our lives has accelerated. Today's vernacular would describe it as a paradigm shift happening twice as fast. The technology of today, will be obsolete in a short amount of time. Using information technology as an example, we can see that in less than one year, progress can double.

Information technology has many more facets than computers, software and electronics. Researchers continue to make vast strides in health care issues as well. New Medicine and drugs are being discovered all the time. They are discovering not just how drugs work, but actually why they work.

Scientists continue working with the human genome. This is our genetic code. Imagine, the discoveries they are making about what makes the cells of the body work. The genome projected was completed several years ago, and that is why we can move so much faster now. In the first three years after the project was completed, the amount of genetic data that was decoded was doubling every ten months. The price of decoding a gene base pair declined to less than a penny today. This was a dramatic cost reduction since the cost in 1990 was $10.00 a pair.

It took researchers fifteen years to sequence the HIV virus. They were able to sequence the SARS virus in one month, and now are capable of sequencing a virus in just a few days. We can now develop models on major diseases.

When the baby boomers were young, man went to the moon, and technology, especially space technology became a paradigm shift. Now the shift has changed and the future is here. Where do you think the future shifts will occur?
