Hope Vs. Optimism

Optimism, yes that beloved attitude that so many admire. The belief that everything will turn out well. Seen in popular culture, from Star Trek (red shirts not withstanding) to Reality TV, there everyone is entitled to fame. The broad concept of optimism in its most pure form, leads to a state of mind that believes everything is as it should be, and will be the same in the future.

Hope on the other hand carries with it a more realistic realisation, and is a far more emotional state than optimism. hope is more an act of looking forward with a true desire that an event may happen. It is the more personal, yet more contagious condition.

Let us look at two example that I'm sure you've heard.

"The glass if half full" and "Hope springs eternal"

As we see, the first seems to deal with looking at something with a perspective that things are good. Whereas the second, is telling us about something in the human heart. An eternal need to believe, if you will. Something we have inside ourselves that is personal, but at the same time shared by all. Hope, a belief to be clung onto. Optimism can carry only so far, hope is always there. No matter how bad things my seem, we have this hope that it will get better.

Let me leave you with this thought. Optimism may come and go but hope never dies.
